The Club History

The Club: An Exploration of Lived History

It seems appropriate that the new website should include an opportunity to look back on to the history of Buxton and High Peak Golf Club (subsequently to be called The Club). This part of the website is going to attempt to provide an insight to some of the history, traditions and values of The Club, with the intention of making this information readily available to visitors, the community of Buxton and members old and new.

I have been fortunate to have been supported in this by many people. I would like to especially mention the encouragement of Chris Palmer, Scott Wanless and The Club Committee (in particular Rupert and Bryn), without whose support the project would have floundered immediately. The unprecedented access I have been given to Club records has enabled a plan (of sorts) to be made; currently it looks like this.

  1. To build on the remarkable and extensive work of Moss, J., Williamson, D. and Leach, R. (1987) The First 100 Years Chapel-en-le-Frith: Peak Press.
  2. To secure and review the contents of the Archive Trunk, stored in the clubhouse flat for many years.
  3. To interview any and all past or existing members (including individuals who have been associated with The Club) and record their memories and anecdotes on a digital recorder. It is important to understand that this requires the normal ethical protocols of research to be followed, in particular consent and the right to withdraw information provided.

This will be available on the website, accessed via a hyperlink. As an example, the story of the Bryden Cup will be told in three ways: written, with photographs and (crucially) through the memories of those who have taken part in this competition.

This approach to documenting oral history gives The Club the opportunity to create a “lived experience of the places and spaces” we know as The Club. It will provide a picture of how The Club has evolved to its present form and, perhaps, enable us to feel that we have all made a little difference to the understanding of the community that is The Club.

I will be pleased to hear your views on this project and happy to receive ideas and contributions in due course.
