Centenary News

Three Centenary Newspaper reports

I am indebted to Ron Clarke and “others” for this information.

Included here are three news items reporting the centenary of The Club.

The first is from The Buxton Advertiser dated 1 April 1987 and is headed “The Club hits a century”, a curious title for a golf club article and perhaps more appropriate to a cricket club.

With a great picture of the quarry on the 11th, it was interesting to see how little appears to have changed around there. Sid Armitt is honoured as being the centenary year president, one of his many contributions to The Club.

The photo of three generations of the Norton family is also noteworthy.

The second article is from The Daily Telegraph, dated Friday 12 June 1987. In the Look North (how kind of them to glance this way) it is entitled “Buxton’s progress from the rough”. While the title has a little golfing imagery in it, I remain unsure as to what they are trying to say!

However, it does chart the history of The Club in a clear and concise style, making references to key figures such as W R Bryden, C Hutchins and A G Barry. It also refers to the unfortunate experience of Harry Bennett and how the stymie rule was changed in 1951.

The final four page article is also from the Buxton Advertiser, this time published 17 June 1987.

The feature article is far more impressive than that of 1 April; perhaps someone had a word?

It contains some great pictures of the Clubhouse, the old racecourse (dated 1837), a postcard of a caddie from Fairfield School (who was he?), and a charming photo of Graham Poole.

However, for me there is also some interest in the messages of support from local businesses. Some familiar names are there, but it is a testimony to the evolving development of business in the High Peak, that many have disappeared.

I hope that these three sources provide some interest and insights into the history of Buxton and High Peak Golf Club. If any members have material to add or information regarding the Centenary events, I will be happy to add it to this section.
